The levee has been cleared of brush and the trash remains. There isn’t money in the budget to clean trash. We will be able to pile trash nearby for county pickup. We are continuing our work with Friends of Steelhead Creek stewards Dr. Roland Brady and Crystal Tobias to clean this poor, trashed creek. We will meet at the southwest levee gate of Steelhead Creek at West El Camino, near where we have met before. We will then park nearby on the levee. Please come out and help with this project. We will provide bags, but please bring along your sturdy footwear, grabbers, buckets, gloves, and hats – a limited number of loaner buckets and grabbers may be available. AGE LIMIT: This event is not suitable for minors under 16 years old. Minors older than 16 are invited, but must be supervised by a responsible adult. LOCATION: We will meet in the parking lot behind the Home Depot located at 3611 Truxel Road, Sacramento, CA. Please arrive early and enjoy coffee and donuts compliments of MPT Talamantes’ Office! EVENT: This will be an easy to difficult level cleanup with lots of trash, including over 100 shopping carts that are in and around the canal. | 16 - RCWA – Ali’s Friday Arcade CRK Cleanup
09:00 -12:00 02/16/2024 This series of cleanups are being made possible by a Watershed Stewardship and Education Grant awarded by the Sacramento County Stormwater Quality Program. We would like to sincerely thank the County for funds needed to keep our volunteers properly equipped. We will continue to partner with Arcade Creek – Adopt A Creek Project to focus on another infamously trashed stretch of this 16.2 mile creek. We will be visiting a new spot, upstream from Ali’s adopted section, as we inch up toward Lilia’s adopted sections in the City of Citrus Heights. The cleanup area is upstream from Keoncrest where we performed numerous cleanups last year, and downstream from Greenback Lane. We will park at the far back of the Hidden Oaks Apartment Complex by their little dog park, gear up, and walk to Arcade Creek from there. Please arrive on time as the complex is fairly expansive and the route to our meeting spot could be confusing. Please bring water and only do what you are comfortable doing. As always, you can leave whenever you want or need. This cleanup will have some challenging access spots into the creek and may require a rope to get into the channel, however, there are some flat spots as well for easy pickin’. The event will range in difficulty from moderate to hard and may not be suitable for children under the age of 16. There will be something for almost everyone as we will be cleaning in the creek and up above, on land. We will provide bags, but please bring along your sturdy WATERPROOF footwear, grabbers, buckets, and gloves – a limited number of loaner buckets and grabbers may be available. There will be water in the creek, fairly deep in a few spots. Participants will be required to wear rain boots or waders if they intend to get into the water. We hope to hit all the side streets, Landscaping, you name it, there will be a little bit of everything for everyone.
It has been well over a year since we have been in this area, and it certainly deserves our attention.

18 - RCWA – Arcade Crk Cleanup at Norwood
09:00 -12:00 02/18/2024 Our apologies, but this will be an 18 and Over Event due to numerous encampments in the area. With recent high waters now receding, we plan to tackle a brand new area of Arcade Creek to remove soaked and muddy trash and debris campers did not move out of harm’s way when Arcade Creek rose 2 weeks ago. This event will be conducted in coordination with American River Flood Control District who has graciously agreed to haul off all of the trash and encampment debris we pile up. And this will be a BIG one. Sturdy, waterproof boots,long sleeves and long pants are recommended. Folks desiring to enter the creek will need hip or chest waders. This will be an easy to difficult level event with uneven terrain. RCWA will provide bags, but please bring along your grabbers, buckets, and gloves – a limited number of loaner buckets and grabbers may be available. | 19 | 20 | 21 - RCWA – American River Cleanup @ Waterton Way
09:00 -12:00 02/21/2024 It is always fun exploring new areas. Waterton Way is just a short way upstream from the Watt Ave river access. (From U.S. Highway 50, take the Watt Ave. North exit. Then make an immediate right onto the La Riviera Way off-ramp. From there, make a right down La Riviera Drive, then a left on Waterton Way. Turn into the parking lot for the access.). We will be cleaning several abandoned illegal camps right on the river’s edge. The camps are accessible via a steep slippery trail. The camps are on flat ground once we reach them. Trash will probably be hauled up the bank by ropes. This is a beautiful section of the river with abundant wildlife. Please come out and help with this project. We will provide bags, but please bring along your sturdy footwear, grabbers, buckets, gloves, and hats – a limited number of loaner buckets and grabbers may be available. 09:00 -12:00 02/24/2024 Come out and help Michael Tscheu clean up his adopted spot. Michael is proud to report that the entire area between Watt Ave and Howe Ave river access parking lots is all RCWA clean. He spent 3 days last week collecting almost 700 pounds of trash from these neighborhood river trails. Michael needs our help again clean the area from Howe Ave to CSUS. Unfortunately, several of the same camps we have cleaned before are now trashed again. It is encouraging that almost all the camps in the entire area are gone, but trash remains. Let’s go out and help Michael. Meet at Howe Ave river access. Parking passes will be available. This is a relaxed to challenging level cleanup with plenty of easy areas nearby. Something for everyone in this beautiful section of the river. 10:00 -12:00 02/24/2024 It’s another SPIU/Sacramento Splash cleanup at our area’s precious Vernal Pools, where Sacramento Splash leads public tours! Join us from 10am-noon on Saturday February 24th!
We’ll remove illegally dumped trash from these otherwise protected and vital seasonally ephemeral pools that are home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, including endemic flowers, insects and creatures! BRING: gloves & grabbers & buckets if you have them (we will supply them if not!). We have industrial garbage bags for all.
TERRAIN: mostly flat with some uneven terrain in the grassy areas near the pools. We’ll also clean up trash found on or near the road. LOCATION: The vernal pools are located NEAR BUT NOT AT Mather Regional Park, located off Highway 50 east of Sacramento.
From HWY 50, take the Zinfandel Dr exit towards Mather Lake but keep driving on Zinfandel until it turns into Eagles Nest Rd.
Keep driving down Eagles Nest Rd until it TURNS FROM A PAVED ROAD INTO A DIRT ROAD and park anywhere around there! All volunteer activity is performed at your own risk, as always!
