Sacramento Picks it Up - Woodlake Trash Dash

    10:00 -12:00
    02/04/2023

    Saturday, February 4, 2023
    Location: Woodlake (1767 Tribute Road)
    Time: 10:00 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Event Name: SPIU Woodlake Trash Dash

Join us in the beautiful, more remote Woodlake area of the American River Parkway on Saturday for a couple of hours!
We’re continuing to clean up mostly abandoned encampment trash that was in the water until the level receded.
Now all of it—all small items and loose trash—is on the bank, ripe for removing!
This is an easy-ish 1-3 difficulty level Trash Dash with some paved trail, some dirt trail, a 1/2 mile hike out and 1/2 mi hike back in, and in one area a bit of mud with trash sitting on and in sparse blackberry brambles and other vegetation on uneven ground.
So nothing crazy but something for everyone.
We’ll meet with free parking in the parking lot at 1767 Tribute Rd, do our pre-cleanup chat there and head up the levee to the site in a truly lovely part of the Parkway, replete with valley oaks, deer, red wing blackbirds and more!
BRING: Gloves! Grabbers if you have them, but SPIU will provide them if you don’t have one. A bucket is helpful but we have extras.
All bags are provided by Sacramento County Parks as well as pick up of our pile
We’ll have a couple of wagons just in case.
Some sharps may be discovered, and we have all the gear for proper handling and removal.
Older kids are welcome on this cleanup, under supervision and in specific areas!
Waivers will be provided, and high school students can use this towards their community service hours.

Sacramento Valley Conservancy - Vernal Pools Speaker Series

    18:00 -20:00
    02/09/2023

Join us at Camp Pollock on Thursday, February 9, from 6-8pm to learn about vernal pools. Carol Witham will help us to explore the short-lived, weird-looking, fascinating fauna that evolved millions of years ago, and dazzling swaths of tens of thousands of tiny flowers that change from week to week through a two- to- three month “season.” This tour of California vernal pools will answer questions such as “what makes a vernal pool” and “why are they found almost nowhere but California” plus explore vernal pools from throughout the state.

Carol Witham is a self-taught vernal pool ecologist and has been studying that ecosystem for over three decades. She is a private consultant specializing rare plants and animals of vernal pools plus their management. Carol is author of Field Guide to the Vernal Pools of Mather Field, Sacramento County and co-editor of Jepson Prairie Preserve Handbook, 3rd Edition. She is also very active in vernal pool conservation advocacy and education.

Please RSVP by 6pm the evening prior. Space is limited. Parking and admission are free, but donations are encouraged ($5-$20 per person recommended).

Event Name: Friday morning Arcade Creek clean-up

This Friday the meeting place for the bi-weekly Arcade Creek clean-up is the Arcade Creek Park on Omni Drive, because we have been working in this part of the creek lately. We get into Arcade Creek and sometimes haul out heavy items, so bring boots/waders and gloves. There are also areas around the creek that need attention, so if you don’t want to get wet, that’s ok. The difficulty level of this clean up is a 2-5, depending on the terrain people choose to work in.
