Sacramento Streets Connect Directly to Our Waterways

Did you know that storm drains across Sacramento flow directly to local creeks and rivers? It’s true, the drain in your neighborhood is part of a much larger system.

When it rains, or when water flows off our driveways, it enters the storm drain system. Unlike the water in our toilets or sinks, this water doesn’t always go to a treatment plant. Instead, it travels through underground pipes and outlets, carrying whatever it picks up along the way.

From Neighborhoods to Rivers, Stormwater Keeps Moving

Think of the street in front of your home as a waterfront property. A wrapper dropped on the sidewalk, oil leaked on the driveway, or leaves blown into the gutter don’t just disappear. They travel.

What goes down a storm drain can end up in the Sacramento or American River, our local creeks, and the habitats we love. By keeping our streets clean, we aren’t just tidying up the neighborhood, we are protecting the water we drink and the rivers we enjoy.

Simple Actions, Big Impact

Help our system flow freely and keep our rivers clean.

Because our streets connect to the region’s waterways, small changes in how we manage our property can make a massive difference downstream.

  • Keep the Gutters Clear: Ensure your curb and gutter are free of leaves and debris. This prevents clogging and stops organic waste from decaying in our creeks.
  • Only Rain in the Drain: Never pour oil, paint, or soapy water into a storm drain.
  • Dry Cleanup First: Instead of hosing down your driveway or sidewalk (which pushes grime into the drain), use a broom to sweep up debris first.
  • Secure Your Load: When hauling items in a truck, make sure they are tied down so they don’t blow out onto the road and eventually into a drain.
  • Watch the Weather: Try to pick up pet waste and litter before a rainstorm to stop the runoff from carrying it into the system.
